The important distinction is timing: you request each update. ViralVector does not continuously watch an account, collect on an automatic daily schedule, or guarantee that every field will be available. Each row is a point-in-time research record based on what Instagram returned through your signed-in browser session.

Add the account to ViralVector, choose a research role, and use Fetch now to request a profile and recent-media update. After a time interval that matches your research question, request another update. The account's Audience history can then show the saved values and available differences for followers, following, recent engagement rate, and average engagements.
Use a consistent research cadence and comparable collection scope. A difference between two snapshots describes the recorded values at those two points; it does not prove why the change happened, reveal every account-level follow or unfollow event, or forecast what will happen next.

Saved snapshot versus real-time Instagram tracking
These two approaches answer different questions.

What can be compared between saved updates?
The account history currently supports four comparison fields when the underlying data is available.

The recent engagement calculation is:
average engagements = (total available likes + total available comments) / counted eligible media items
recent engagement rate = average engagements / follower count
Eligible media in the current calculation consists of recently collected posts, Reels, and carousels with an available like count, comment count, or both. A missing like or comment value is treated as unavailable within the saved input; media with both values missing is not included in the counted set. If there is no positive follower count or no eligible media, ViralVector does not create a recent engagement snapshot.
This definition matters when comparing results with another tool or spreadsheet. Different products may use reach, impressions, video views, saves, shares, a different post window, a median, or another denominator. Rates are comparable only when the inputs and formula are comparable.
Step-by-step: create and compare account snapshots
1. Sign in to Instagram normally in Chrome
ViralVector uses the Instagram session already available in the browser. It does not ask you to submit your Instagram password to ViralVector.
The extension still requires a working signed-in session. Instagram can require login, verification, rate limiting, or another challenge, and requested fields may be unavailable. Do not describe this workflow as requiring no Instagram login or as bypassing account access controls.
2. Add the account to the local workspace
Open Add account, search for or enter the account username, and choose a role such as My account, Competitor, Benchmark, Creator, or Uncategorized. Select Save account.
The role is an organizational label chosen by the user. ViralVector does not automatically determine whether an account is a competitor, a useful benchmark, or a suitable creator partner.

3. Request the baseline update
Open the saved account and select Fetch now. In the current interface, this starts an explicit account update for the profile and supported recent media sources used by the saved-update workflow.
When data is returned, the account overview can display the latest follower count, following count, snapshot time, recent engagement rate, and average engagements. The Audience history stores dated rows when corresponding observations exist.
Treat this first row as the baseline. Record the research question, collection date, account role, and any missing fields. Do not substitute zero for an unknown or unavailable value.
4. Choose a research cadence
Decide when another point-in-time observation would be useful. A weekly review may suit an active campaign; a monthly review may suit a broader account benchmark. The interval is a user research decision, not an automatic ViralVector schedule.
For better comparisons:
- Collect at a similar time and cadence where practical.
- Use the same account and a comparable recent-content scope.
- Note campaigns, giveaways, paid promotion, collaborations, viral posts, account restrictions, or major content-strategy changes.
- Preserve missing-data notes rather than forcing a complete-looking series.
- Avoid drawing strong conclusions from one short interval or a small number of eligible posts.
5. Request the next saved update
Return to the account and select Fetch now again when you want the next observation. The action is explicit; ViralVector does not perform the update merely because a week or month has passed.
Collection may pause, fail, or return a partial result when the session, content visibility, Instagram response, or current product limits prevent access. Request pacing and cooldown behavior reduce overly aggressive requests but do not make collection risk-free, undetectable, or guaranteed to finish.
6. Read the account history
In the account's Audience history, review the dated rows for:
- Followers and the available count difference.
- Following and the available count difference.
- Recent ER and the percentage-point difference.
- Avg engagements and the numeric difference.
The interface compares each available value with the previous saved row that contains that metric. If a row or metric is missing, the next displayed difference may refer to an earlier available value rather than a perfectly regular time interval. Check dates and missing fields before treating rows as a continuous series.
7. Preserve the evidence you need
Use the saved history as a local research record. A CSV export and an account snapshot are different outputs. The snapshot preserves supported account-level and recent-engagement observations. A follower or following export contains selected accessible audience records. Neither output should be described as a guaranteed complete account history.
Hypothetical Instagram snapshot comparison
The following numbers are an illustrative example, not customer data, a benchmark, or a promised result.

For the July example:
average engagements = (2,880 likes + 160 comments) / 8 items = 380
recent engagement rate = 380 / 10,500 = 3.62%
The point-in-time changes are:
- Followers: +500.
- Following: -10.
- Average engagements: +60.
- Recent engagement rate: approximately +0.42 percentage points.
Those differences do not prove that one post, campaign, creator partnership, or account action caused the change. The recent content mix differs over time, visible metrics can be incomplete, and a net follower-count increase does not reveal all follower-level additions and removals that occurred between the two dates.
How to interpret snapshot changes without overclaiming
Check the denominator and sample first
A recent engagement rate can rise because average available likes and comments increased, because follower count changed, because the counted media mix changed, or because some metrics were unavailable. Review the follower count, counted-post context, and collection dates together.
Separate observation from explanation
“Follower count increased by 500 between these saved updates” is an observation. “The giveaway caused 500 new followers” is a causal explanation that the snapshot alone cannot prove.
Add campaign notes, content changes, and other evidence before forming a hypothesis. Even then, describe the conclusion with appropriate uncertainty.
Treat competitor data as incomplete external evidence
For competitors, benchmarks, and creators, you usually have less context than for an account you operate. Visible counts and recent content can support comparison, but they do not reveal private reach, impressions, saves, shares, paid distribution, conversion, audience demographics, business results, or internal strategy.
Keep formulas consistent
Do not compare ViralVector's recent engagement snapshot directly with a rate calculated from reach, impressions, video views, or a different content window. Label the formula and data source in any spreadsheet or report.
Keep the dates visible
A difference without collection dates can be misleading. A gain across seven days is not directly comparable with a gain across ninety days. If a saved update failed or a metric was missing, document the gap.
Practical uses for saved Instagram account snapshots
Review an account you manage
Save periodic account observations and use them as one input in a manual performance review. Compare visible follower, following, and recent engagement context alongside campaign notes and first-party Instagram insights available to the account owner.

Build a competitor or benchmark comparison

Prepare a research handoff
Record the source account, role, collection dates, formula, missing values, and interpretation notes. Link related CSV exports or supporting evidence in your own reporting system.
The ViralVector Chrome workspace is local. It does not provide a cloud team workspace, multi-seat permissions, client portals, or automated report generation in the current verified build.

Local-first data handling and platform limits
In the current release code path, selected Instagram research is stored in Chrome extension storage and IndexedDB on the user's device. ViralVector does not ask the user to submit an Instagram password, and the verified release path does not send Instagram content, account identifiers, exports, cookies, or authentication tokens to ViralVector servers.
“Local-first” does not mean offline or that data can never leave extension storage:
- Fresh updates request data directly from Instagram through the available signed-in browser session.
- A CSV leaves extension storage when the user exports and saves it.
- Selected media downloads may retrieve files from Instagram or Meta CDN domains.
- Data can enter a compatible local AI client if the user separately enables the optional MCP connection.
Instagram can change its website, data formats, limits, access controls, and enforcement behavior. Collection may pause, fail, or produce fewer fields than expected after login, verification, rate-limit, feedback, challenge, or rejection responses. ViralVector cannot guarantee uninterrupted access, complete data, permanent URLs, or Instagram account status.
Only collect and use information you are authorized to access. Apply the laws, contracts, platform terms, privacy requirements, and internal policies relevant to your location, organization, and research purpose.
