Start with a competitor question, not a data dump

Before collecting anything, define the decision your research should support. A focused question makes it easier to choose relevant accounts, comparable fields, and a useful time frame.

Examples include:

  • Which content formats and topics recur across a small set of relevant competitor accounts?
  • How do selected accounts differ in posting activity and available recent engagement context?
  • What changed in visible follower, following, or recent engagement fields between two saved updates?

Choose a small, relevant account set rather than treating every account in a category as directly comparable. Three to five accounts is often a practical starting point for manual research, but it is a method recommendation—not a ViralVector product limit.

One local workspace for multiple research objects

Competitor research rarely fits into a single follower count. ViralVector can keep several types of selected Instagram research in the same Chrome extension workspace.

Accounts and research roles

Save relevant accounts and label them as competitor, benchmark, creator, my account, or uncategorized. These roles help you separate direct competitors from aspirational benchmarks, creator partners, and accounts you operate.

The role is chosen by the user. ViralVector does not automatically identify a competitor, determine market relevance, or score the quality of a creator.

Profiles and saved account updates

Save accessible account profile fields at different points in time. When supported data is available, the workspace can show changes in follower count, following count, recent engagement rate, and average engagements between saved updates.

These are point-in-time comparisons, not continuous or real-time monitoring. A saved update reflects what Instagram returned through the current signed-in session when the collection was requested.

Posts, Reels, Stories, Highlights, and media

Collect available recent media and organize selected posts, Reels, active Stories, Highlights, captions, and media metadata for review. This can help researchers examine recurring formats, themes, calls to action, and visible engagement patterns.

Availability varies by account, content visibility, session access, and Instagram response. ViralVector does not guarantee complete content history, permanent media availability, or access to every content type for every account.

Comments

Save accessible comments associated with selected posts or account media. Comments can provide qualitative evidence about audience questions, recurring reactions, product language, and content interpretation.

Comments are not a representative audience survey. Treat them as contextual observations, and follow applicable privacy, platform, and research requirements when storing or using them.

Followers and following records

Where accessible, collect selected follower and following records for research or CSV preparation. These records may help with manual audience overlap exploration or account-list review.

They do not provide complete audience demographics, reach, impressions, or proof that one account caused another account's growth. Current exports are limited by data availability and product limits.

Hashtag results and related content signals

Save available hashtag results to explore posts, recurring creators, related hashtags, and caption terms alongside account research. These signals can help identify material for further review.

They are not Instagram search-volume estimates, market-demand measurements, trend forecasts, influencer scores, or viral predictions.

CSV exports and selected media downloads

Export supported saved records to CSV for your own spreadsheet, analysis, or report-preparation workflow. You can also initiate downloads for selected available media.

ViralVector does not automatically create a finished client report, sync directly to Google Sheets, or guarantee that an export is complete. The current implementation supports CSV and applies current row limits; the main supported data exports allow up to 1,000 records per export in the current build.

A repeatable Instagram competitor research workflow

1. Define the market and comparison question

Write down the category, region, audience, product type, or content theme that makes an account relevant. Decide whether you are studying direct competitors, benchmarks, creators, or a mixture of those groups.

Also decide what you will not infer. For example, visible posts and comments may support content observations, but they do not reveal complete reach, saves, shares, conversion, attribution, or private business performance.

2. Select relevant accounts yourself

Choose a manageable account set and document why each account belongs in it. Add selected accounts to the local workspace and assign the most useful research role.

ViralVector supports organizing the set; it does not automatically discover the market, verify that an account is a true competitor, or recommend the “best” account to copy.

3. Collect comparable accessible fields

For each selected account, request the same relevant data types where available—for example:

  • Profile fields and follower/following counts.
  • Recent posts, Reels, or other accessible media.
  • Available likes and comments used for recent engagement context.
  • Selected post or media comments.
  • Relevant followers, following records, or hashtag results.

Record missing fields rather than filling gaps with assumptions. Private accounts, unavailable content, session limits, Instagram changes, warnings, and rate limits can all affect what can be collected.

4. Save a dated baseline

Treat the first collected account state as a research baseline. Note the date, scope, account role, and fields included so a later update can be compared on the same basis.

Do not describe this as an always-on watchlist. A later comparison requires another explicit saved update, and the result only covers fields available at those collection points.

5. Compare saved updates carefully

When more than one supported update is available, review changes in follower count, following count, recent engagement rate, and average engagements. Keep observations separate from explanations.

For example, “follower count increased between these two saved updates” is an observation. “A specific Reel caused the increase” is a causal claim that the available data does not prove.

The recent engagement snapshot is based on available saved likes and comments for collected posts, Reels, or carousels relative to the available follower count. It does not include reach, impressions, shares, or saves.

6. Review content and comments for context

Use selected posts, captions, formats, and comments to add qualitative context to the account-level comparison. Look for recurring themes, offers, questions, creative patterns, and visible audience reactions.

Avoid turning a small visible sample into a universal conclusion. Note how many items were reviewed, what period they cover, and what was unavailable.

7. Export the evidence you need

Export supported saved records to CSV when you need a spreadsheet handoff, a source table, or additional analysis outside the extension. Keep source usernames, content identifiers, collection dates, and limitations with the working file when appropriate.

If a claim cannot be tied to a collected record or a clearly labeled interpretation, leave it out of the final report.

Research handoff for marketers and agencies

A useful handoff should make the evidence understandable to someone who did not perform the collection. Use a consistent naming convention and include the scope behind each export.

A simple project structure might include:

  • Research question: the decision or hypothesis being explored.
  • Account set: username, assigned role, and reason for inclusion.
  • Collection date: when each profile, media set, comment set, or hashtag result was saved.
  • Evidence scope: the fields and content types requested.
  • Missing data: inaccessible, unavailable, failed, or incomparable fields.
  • Observations: statements directly supported by saved records.
  • Interpretations: clearly labeled hypotheses or questions for further investigation.
  • Exports: the selected CSV files used for spreadsheet or report preparation.

ViralVector stores the research objects locally in the user's browser workspace, but it is not a cloud team workspace. It does not provide shared projects, multi-seat permissions, client portals, or automatic report approval. Teams can use their own naming, storage, and review processes after creating user-controlled exports.

Responsible collection, privacy, and platform limits

ViralVector uses the Instagram session already signed in within Chrome. It does not ask the user to submit an Instagram password to ViralVector. Fresh collection still makes requests to Instagram, and selected media downloads may retrieve files from Instagram or Meta CDN domains.

Collected Instagram research is stored in the extension's local browser storage in the current release. Data can leave that storage when the user exports records, downloads media, or enables the optional local connection to a compatible MCP client. Do not describe the workflow as offline or claim that no data ever leaves the browser.

Instagram may change its website, response formats, content availability, access limits, or enforcement practices. Collection can pause or fail when Instagram requires login, verification, rate limiting, or another challenge. Request pacing and cooldown behavior do not eliminate account risk or guarantee uninterrupted access.

Only collect and use information you are authorized to access. Apply the laws, contractual requirements, platform terms, privacy rules, and internal policies relevant to your organization and research purpose.
