An Instagram CSV export is most useful when it answers a specific question. You might need a follower or following list, recent media metadata, saved comments, or hashtag posts—not an undefined dump of everything associated with an account.

With ViralVector, the workflow is:

1. Use the Instagram session already signed in within Chrome.
2. Choose an account, post, audience list, or hashtag you are authorized to research.
3. Collect and save the accessible records in the extension's local browser workspace.
4. Review the saved records and choose a row count.
5. Export the supported dataset as CSV.

The current verified build supports up to 1,000 records per main export. Availability depends on the signed-in session, what the account or content exposes, records already saved, and Instagram's response. ViralVector is not an unlimited or guaranteed-complete Instagram scraper.

What Instagram data can you export to CSV?

ViralVector can export several kinds of selected, saved Instagram records. Choose the dataset that matches the question you plan to answer after opening the file.

An account profile and its saved updates provide context inside the workspace, but do not assume that every profile field is included in every CSV. Review the columns in the downloaded file before using it in an analysis or client deliverable.

Before you export: define the file you actually need

Write down one research question before collecting data. This keeps the export smaller, easier to validate, and less likely to mix records gathered for different purposes.

Examples:

• Which follower records are currently available for an account I manage?
• Which accounts appear in a selected following list and deserve manual review?
• Which recent posts and Reels should be coded by format, topic, or call to action?
• Which saved comments contain recurring product questions?
• Which creators or content patterns recur in the accessible results for a hashtag?

Also record the source username or hashtag, the collection date, the dataset type, and why you are authorized to use the information. A CSV file does not carry the full context of the browser session or research decision unless you preserve it.

Step-by-step: export Instagram data to CSV with ViralVector

The labels below match the current verified extension interface. Recheck them against the release build before adding screenshots.

1. Sign in to Instagram in Chrome

Open Instagram in the same Chrome profile that runs ViralVector and sign in normally. ViralVector uses the browser session already available in Chrome; it does not ask you to submit your Instagram password to ViralVector.

This does not remove Instagram's access controls. A private account, unavailable content, login challenge, verification request, rate limit, or changed response can reduce or stop collection.

2. Add the account or hashtag to your local workspace

Open the ViralVector dashboard.

• For an account, select Add account, choose the account yourself, assign a useful role if needed, and select Save account.
• For a hashtag, select Add hashtag, enter the relevant tag, and select Track hashtag.

Roles such as your own account, competitor, benchmark, or creator help organize research. ViralVector does not automatically decide whether an account is a true competitor, a suitable creator, or the right research target.

3. Collect the accessible dataset you need

Open the saved target and request the relevant update.

• Select Fetch now or the appropriate Update control for account profile context.
• Update followers or following when you need an audience CSV.
• Use Update media for available posts, Reels, active Stories, or Highlights.
• Open a saved post and select Update comments when comments are part of the research question.
• On a saved hashtag, select Update hashtag to refresh accessible hashtag results.

Collection is user-triggered, not continuous monitoring. Keep Chrome open and the Instagram session available while an update runs. ViralVector paces requests and can pause after certain warning signals, but this does not guarantee uninterrupted access or eliminate account risk.

4. Review what was saved locally

Before exporting, inspect the relevant account, audience, media, comments, or hashtag view. Check:

• The target username or hashtag is correct.
• The records are recent enough for the intended analysis.
• The visible row count is plausible for the requested scope.
• Missing fields, failed updates, or inaccessible content are documented.
• The file will not combine dates or targets that should remain separate.

ViralVector stores collected research in the extension's local browser storage in the current verified build. “Local” does not mean no network activity: fresh collection requests Instagram, and selected media downloads can request files from Instagram or Meta CDN domains.

5. Choose the export and its scope

Use the export action that matches the dataset:

• Select Export Followers or Export Following from an account's Audience area.
• Select Export Media for saved account media data.
• Select Export posts from a tracked hashtag.

In the export dialog, choose the Count or Rows value and any available include options. For media exports, Media data is the CSV component; Media files is a separate file-download workflow. Comments can be included only where the current interface and saved records support them.

The current main export maximum is 1,000 records per export. A preset or “All available” option means all records available within the current product cap and selected scope—not every record that may exist on Instagram.

6. Start, download, and verify the CSV

Select Start export or Export, depending on the dataset. When the export finishes, the browser downloads the CSV. The dashboard's Exports section also records available export packages and provides a Download action for stored CSV content.

Open the file and verify:

• Filename and source target.
• Column headers and encoding.
• Row count against the selected export count.
• Collection timestamps or source identifiers where present.
• Blank, unavailable, or unexpectedly duplicated values.
• Whether spreadsheet software altered usernames, identifiers, dates, or URLs during import.

Do not treat a successful download as proof that the underlying dataset is complete.

Prepare the CSV for a spreadsheet or report

CSV is a handoff format. ViralVector creates the selected file; the following cleanup and documentation steps belong to your spreadsheet or reporting process.

Keep a source note

Record the source account, post, or hashtag; collection date; export date; selected row count; and research purpose. If multiple exports feed one workbook, keep a small data dictionary explaining each tab or file.

Preserve raw and working copies

Keep an unchanged raw CSV and make transformations in a separate working file. This gives reviewers a way to distinguish source records from cleaned, categorized, or manually enriched fields.

Use consistent filenames

A practical convention is:

instagram_[target]_[dataset]_[collection-date]_[export-date].csv

For example:

Label observations and interpretations separately

“The saved CSV contains 420 accessible records” is an observation. “This is the account's complete audience” is a claim the file cannot prove. Add separate columns or report sections for notes, interpretations, and unresolved questions.

Check spreadsheet type conversion

Spreadsheet tools can reinterpret identifiers, timestamps, URLs, and text beginning with special characters. Import the CSV with deliberate column types when accuracy matters, and retain the raw file for comparison.

CSV export and media download are different outputs

An account media CSV contains structured data about saved media. Selecting Media files starts a separate, user-initiated download of available photos or videos.

Keep these boundaries clear:

• A CSV is not a ZIP archive of every photo or video.
• A media download does not create a complete metadata table unless the CSV export is also selected.
• Media URLs and active Stories may expire or become unavailable.
• ViralVector does not guarantee that every Instagram media file can be downloaded.
• Only download and use content when you are authorized to do so and your use complies with applicable law, rights, contracts, platform terms, and internal policy.

What the CSV export does not include or guarantee

The current verified build should not be described as providing:

• Unlimited exports or a guaranteed complete Instagram dataset.
• Native XLSX, JSON, PDF, or Google Sheets synchronization.
• An automatically generated client report or dashboard.
• Complete historical posts, Stories, followers, following, comments, or hashtag results.

• A guaranteed unfollower list or complete follower-level change history.

Local storage, privacy, and account-risk boundaries

ViralVector uses the Instagram session already signed in within Chrome. It does not ask you to submit your Instagram password to ViralVector, but the extension still depends on local session availability and can temporarily use locally available authentication information to make requested Instagram calls.

Collected records are stored in the extension's local browser workspace in the current verified build. Data can leave that storage when you export a CSV, download selected media, or enable the optional local MCP connection to a compatible client. Do not describe the extension as offline or claim that data never leaves the browser.

Instagram can change its website, response formats, access limits, or enforcement behavior. Collection may pause or fail because of login requirements, verification, a challenge, rate limiting, unavailable content, or another rejected response. ViralVector's request pacing and cooldown behavior do not make collection risk-free.

Only collect and process information you are authorized to access. Your organization is responsible for assessing applicable privacy, data-protection, copyright, contractual, employment, and platform requirements for the intended use.
